On Sunday morning in Brooklyn, NYPD officers fatally shot a man armed with a gun following a brief foot pursuit, according to police and sources.
The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. at East 86th Street, where six officers responded to a report about a 28-year-old man who had breached an order of protection and was seen with a firearm while leaving a building.
“Upon arrival, officers identified an individual matching the suspect’s description vacating the premises. When approached, he fled the scene,” stated Assistant Chief Francis A. Giordano during a press conference held at the location of the incident.
“The firearm was drawn and in his possession during the encounter, which was quite precarious,” Giordano informed reporters.
According to officials, the suspect, still holding the gun, ran from the officers on foot. They stated he did not fire any shots while police attempted to convince him to drop the weapon.
“Numerous instructions were given to him to relinquish the firearm,” Giordano remarked. “After multiple warnings to drop the weapon went unheeded, the subject was shot in the chest.”

Officers subsequently placed the suspect in handcuffs and called for an ambulance, but ultimately rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals / Kings County in their patrol vehicle, where he was declared deceased.
“Our priority was to save his life; hence the decision to transport him straight to the hospital,” Giordano said.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, and body camera footage related to the incident is currently under review by an internal investigation team.
According to Giordano, the woman who alerted authorities had previously made two reports concerning domestic violence involving the suspect.
She contacted the police due to the man’s harassing behavior at her doorstep and informed officers that she was in the process of obtaining a restraining order against him.
The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed at this time.
