An NYPD sergeant is facing serious criminal charges after causing a fatal wrong-way crash while driving under the influence. Tiffany Howell, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, reportedly had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit when she collided head-on with 61-year-old Manuel Boitel on the Taconic State Parkway.

The New York Attorney General’s Office has indicted Howell on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter. During her arraignment, Westchester County Court Judge George Fufidio set her bail at $100,000 cash. Assistant Attorney General Allison Stuart expressed the gravity of the situation, stating that Howell’s reckless actions resulted in the death of Manuel Boitel, showing a blatant disregard for his life and the safety of others on the road.

The tragic crash occurred as Howell was traveling back from an NYPD benefit event to her home in Warwick, Orange County. She mistakenly drove south in the northbound lanes, ultimately colliding with Boitel’s vehicle as he was heading home from work. Boitel, a beloved father and husband, was known for his selfless nature and desire to become a police officer himself.

Howell’s defense attorney, Andrew Quinn, emphasized that the allegations against his client were uncharacteristic of her usual behavior. Despite this, the NYPD has suspended Howell without pay, and she could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charges.

The devastating loss of Manuel Boitel has left a significant void in his family, who described him as a compassionate individual who always put others’ needs before his own. He had a deep admiration for law enforcement and regularly supported funds for police officers, making his untimely death even more poignant.

As the legal process unfolds, the community mourns the loss of Manuel Boitel and awaits justice for the tragic consequences of Tiffany Howell’s actions.
