Six lives were lost in the landslide at Beachside Holiday Park, while another two perished in a separate slip in Papamoa on the same day.
Families of the victims, along with emergency services, held a solemn service at the base of Mauao before joining the vigil. Seats were reserved for the families, with older community members sitting nearby in a show of solidarity.
Many attendees expressed the importance of coming together to support one another and the victims’ families during this difficult time. A somber atmosphere has lingered since the tragic events of a week ago.
One woman brought black balloons with the victims’ names written in gold as a tribute.
Students from Te Wharekura o Mauao performed emotional songs, including a rendition of Whakaaria Mai (How Great Thou Art) in both Maori and English.
Tauranga Mayor Mahe Drysdale acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedies on the community, stating that the events have forever altered their lives.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and solidarity shown to those affected by the disasters.
The evening concluded with a karakia, bringing a sense of peace and unity to all in attendance.
