NZME has announced plans to close down 14 of its community newspapers, citing a decline in advertising revenue as the reason for the decision. The proposed closures include the long-standing Te Awamutu Courier, which has been serving its community for over a century.

In an email obtained by RNZ, NZME explained that the closure of these publications is necessary due to the challenging market conditions. While the media company has been performing well overall, the community publication network has been struggling financially.

The Waikato Herald and The Weekend Sun will be spared from the cuts, as they are considered essential parts of NZME’s core offerings in the Waikato region. The Weekend Sun, in particular, has a strong digital presence and the potential to attract a wider audience.

The 14 publications included in the closure proposal are:

  • Hauraki Coromandel Post
  • Katikati Advertiser
  • Te Puke Times
  • Taupō and TÅ«rangi Herald
  • Napier Courier
  • Hastings Leader
  • CHB Mail
  • Bush Telegraph
  • Stratford Press
  • Whanganui Midweek
  • ManawatÅ« Guardian
  • Horowhenua Chronicle
  • Kāpiti News

While this decision is undoubtedly a difficult one, NZME is confident that it is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of its community publication network.
