Barack Obama Alleges Republicans Aim to ‘Steal’ Seats, ‘Rig’ Elections in Support of Newsom’s Gerrymandering Initiative

Former President Barack Obama, alongside California Governor Gavin Newsom, is making a push for Californians to endorse Proposition 50. This contentious ballot measure seeks to substitute the current independent redistricting framework with a legislative map, one that is anticipated to abolish a number of Republican-controlled congressional districts.

On Tuesday, Newsom shared a compelling message on X, stating, “Listen to @barackobama,” linking to a newly released video featuring Obama rallying support for Proposition 50 ahead of the November 4 special election.

In the video presentation, Obama asserts:

“California, the whole nation is counting on you. Democracy is on the ballot November 4. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years. With Prop 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks. Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, which preserves Independent Redistricting over the long term, and lets the people decide. Return your ballot today. Vote yes on 50.”
