Barack Obama has expressed concern over President Donald Trump and his administration’s stance that criticizing the United States is deemed “unpatriotic.”

Obama, in a preview clip for an upcoming interview with MS NOW’s Michelle Norris, stated, “This notion that any critique or suggestion that America is less than perfect is unpatriotic… is implying that you despise your country.”

He further commented, “Conversely, among progressives, there’s sometimes an inclination to see America solely through a lens of oppression and exclusion. I dismiss both perspectives. The reality is more complex.”

Throughout his second term, Trump has consistently labeled critics, particularly especially Democrats and members of the mainstream media, as “unpatriotic” in response to those who oppose his leadership or policies.

In February, Trump referred to American skier Hunter Hess as “a real loser” for expressing “mixed emotions” about representing the United States at the Winter Olympics.

Vice President JD Vance has similarly echoed Trump’s sentiments, criticizing Olympians who speak out on political matters.

During a Fox News appearance on Tuesday, Vance criticized “terrible” Democrats for their perceived lack of “gratitude” towards America.

He stated, “It’s fine to disagree with our policies, but if you don’t feel thankful to live here and for those who made it possible, then why are you in public service? Many Democrats fail to appreciate the country.”

In his discussion with Norris, Obama mentioned the possibility of both “celebrating” the Founding Fathers and “objectively and critically assessing how their values diverged from their stated ideals.”

He explained, “Understanding America’s complexities and contradictions doesn’t diminish your love for it. In fact, it can increase your affection.”

Obama suggested this perspective could assist Americans during challenging times in the nation’s history.

“It empowers you to recognize that this is part of our ongoing journey,” he remarked.

“And there’s no reason to believe we can’t overcome this period as well.”
