Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has heaped praise on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their outstanding performances in the recent ODI series against South Africa. The duo played pivotal roles in India’s 2-1 series win, with Kohli clinching the Player of the Series award for his impressive 302 runs at an average of 151 and a strike rate of 117.05, while Rohit contributed 146 runs at an average of 48.67 and a strike rate of 110.61.

During a press conference following India’s comprehensive nine-wicket victory in the third ODI in Visakhapatnam, Gambhir lauded the veteran pair, referring to them as world-class players whose experience is invaluable in the dressing room. He expressed hope that Kohli and Rohit would continue their stellar performances in the 50-over format.

However, when asked about the potential participation of Kohli and Rohit in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Gambhir adopted a cautious approach, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present and allowing young talents to seize their opportunities in the team.

In the third ODI, India successfully restricted South Africa to 270 runs before chasing down the target with ease, thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unbeaten century and significant contributions from Rohit and Kohli. The victory showcased the team’s depth and resilience in the absence of key players like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

Gambhir also commended Ruturaj Gaikwad for his stellar performance in the series, particularly his century in the second ODI in Raipur. Despite batting out of position, Gaikwad showcased his quality and grabbed the opportunity with both hands, earning praise from the coach for his resilience under pressure.

While acknowledging that Gaikwad and Jaiswal may have limited opportunities once regular players return to the side, Gambhir emphasized the importance of building a strong pool of players for the upcoming World Cup. He highlighted the need to provide opportunities to young talents and maintain a group of around 20-25 players to ensure depth and competition within the squad.

As Gill and Iyer prepare to make their comebacks in the T20Is following their respective injuries, Gambhir urged the youngsters to stay motivated and be ready to seize their chances whenever they arise. The coach’s focus on nurturing talent and creating a competitive environment bodes well for Team India’s future prospects in international cricket.

In conclusion, Gambhir’s balanced approach to team selection and player development underscores the team’s commitment to excellence and long-term success. With a blend of experienced stalwarts and promising youngsters, India’s ODI team looks poised for continued success on the global stage.
