New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been a vocal advocate for addressing climate change, recently signing a bill that aims to fine fossil fuel companies $75 billion for their supposed contribution to global warming. However, it seems that Hochul’s actions may not align with her words when it comes to her personal travel habits.
According to a report by The New York Post, Hochul has spent a staggering $415,000 on private jets since 2021. This hefty tab, which was covered by her campaign committee, includes at least 30 flights aboard private jets in the last four years. Hochul flew with two private-airline companies, Zephyr Jets and Apollo Jets, with no flight costing less than $5,000 and her most expensive trip billed at $38,594.00.
Critics have been quick to point out the hypocrisy of Hochul’s lavish private jet travel, especially in light of her vocal stance on climate change. One local pilot experienced in private aviation remarked, “It’s very wasteful, especially for an elected official. There is no reason why any elected official in New York should be taking a private jet. Nearly everywhere in New York or upstate has a [commercial] airport that will take you anywhere in the country. New York is one of the most well-connected places on the planet.”
It’s a familiar refrain in politics – the people who preach the loudest about the importance of addressing climate change often fail to practice what they preach. Hochul’s actions serve as a reminder that actions speak louder than words, and that true commitment to combating climate change requires more than just passing legislation. It requires leading by example and making personal sacrifices for the greater good.
As social media users were quick to point out, Hochul’s private jet travel is just another example of the “rules for thee but not for me” mentality that seems to plague many politicians. It’s a stark reminder that when it comes to addressing climate change, everyone – even elected officials – must be willing to make the necessary changes and sacrifices to create a more sustainable future for all.
