Off-Duty NYPD Detective Attacked While Trying to Stop Unhinged Man at Starbucks
An off-duty NYPD detective was punched in the head as she tried to stop an unhinged man from throwing food around a Midtown Starbucks Friday morning, according to police and sources familiar with the incident.
The 39-year-old female detective witnessed the man hurling food items around the coffee chain’s Sixth Avenue and West 57th Street location around 7:45 a.m. and decided to intervene. However, her attempt to stop the man resulted in him punching her in the head, causing a minor cut that required treatment at the scene, authorities said.
Although a person of interest was taken into custody following the incident, no charges had been filed by the early evening.
This attack comes in the wake of a recent incident where a man bit a Bronx Family Dollar worker who tried to prevent him from shoplifting, and then proceeded to slash another employee during a violent heist on Monday, as reported by the authorities.
Similarly, in June, a violent altercation occurred at a Duane Reade on Third Avenue near East 52nd Street, where a man attempting to steal a can of soda ended up stabbing a security guard who confronted him, according to the police at the time.
