Olympic equestrian Heath Ryan has been suspended following the emergence of a troubling video. The video shows Ryan allegedly whipping a horse over 40 times, sparking outrage among fans and prompting an investigation by Equestrian Australia (EA).
The video depicts Ryan and Nico, a two-year-old horse, with Ryan striking the animal multiple times. EA expressed deep concern over the incident, especially considering Ryan’s status as a decorated equestrian athlete who represented Australia in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
EA issued a statement expressing their alarm and announced a provisional suspension of Ryan’s membership and related privileges within the organization.
“The individual in the video is a member of Equestrian Australia,” the organization stated.
“Equestrian Australia has temporarily suspended this individual’s membership and associated rights, pending further investigation,” the statement continued.
The suspension prohibits the individual from participating in any equestrian events or activities under EA’s jurisdiction.
The investigation into Ryan’s actions is ongoing, and his future within the organization will be determined upon its completion.
Ryan, 66, defended his actions, stating that he was trying to discipline the horse, Nico, who had behavioral issues. He claimed that his intention was to save Nico from being put down by teaching him obedience through the disciplinary measures.
Ryan expressed regret over the video, acknowledging the negative perception it created. He emphasized that his actions were driven by a desire to find a solution for Nico’s behavioral issues.
Ryan clarified that he ultimately found a new home for Nico after a few days of working with the horse, ensuring a positive outcome for the animal.
Despite the success in rehoming Nico, Ryan lamented the negative impact of the video on his reputation and expressed his sincere efforts to address the horse’s behavioral issues.
Ryan awaits the conclusion of EA’s investigation to determine his future involvement in equestrian activities.
Ryan’s fate within the organization will be decided based on the findings of the investigation.
