The tragic incident involving Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei and her ex-boyfriend has come to a devastating end, with the accused ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, succumbing to his injuries from the attack. Ndiema passed away at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, on Monday evening, where he had been receiving treatment for burns covering 30 percent of his body.

Cheptegei, on the other hand, had been hospitalized in the same facility with burns covering 80 percent of her body. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, the Olympic athlete tragically passed away from organ failure last week at the age of 33.

The horrific attack reportedly took place at Cheptegei’s home in Kenya, near the Ugandan border, while she was at church with her two young daughters. Ndiema allegedly broke into the house and set Cheptegei on fire during a dispute over land she had purchased near the country’s athletic training center.

One of Cheptegei’s daughters witnessed the gruesome scene and attempted to help her mother, only to be kicked by Ndiema. Neighbors were alerted to the situation and tried to extinguish the flames, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful.

The Uganda Athletics Federation released a statement mourning the loss of Cheptegei and condemning domestic violence. They called for justice for the slain athlete and expressed their deep sadness at the tragic outcome of the incident.

Cheptegei had competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place. She had also achieved success in other races, including winning the Padova Marathon in Italy and placing fourth in the Abu Dhabi Marathon in 2022. She had represented Uganda in multiple World Cross Championships in Spain and Poland.

The untimely death of Rebecca Cheptegei has sent shockwaves through the athletic community and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence. May she rest in peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire others in the world of sports.
