In the current landscape of American business and culture, the issue of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has become more critical than ever. This week’s episode of the Run-Through features a conversation between Nicole Phelps and Aurora James, the visionary behind the 15% Pledge. Founded in 2020, the 15% Pledge is a nonprofit organization that advocates for retailers to allocate 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses.

James, the founder of Brother Vellies, shares the inspiration behind the 15% Pledge. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s tragic death, she noticed the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Black-owned businesses. With 44% of Black-owned businesses at risk of closure and limited access to essential financial support, James saw an opportunity for major retailers to make a meaningful change. By committing to dedicating 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned brands, retailers could support diversity and economic empowerment within their communities.

The journey of the 15% Pledge has not been without challenges. As DEI initiatives gain momentum, James emphasizes the importance of industry support for small, independent brands. She recognizes the responsibility she carries in ensuring the success of the organization, as its failure could perpetuate negative narratives about the necessity of diversity and inclusion efforts.

Through the 15% Pledge, James aims to level the playing field and provide equal opportunities for entrepreneurs of color. By showcasing success stories and demonstrating the positive impact of inclusive practices, she hopes to change the narrative surrounding DEI initiatives. The conversation between Phelps and James delves into the organization’s progress and the ongoing work needed to create a more equitable business landscape.

As the dialogue around diversity and inclusion continues to evolve, the 15% Pledge remains a beacon of hope for marginalized communities. By amplifying the voices of Black-owned businesses and advocating for systemic change, the organization is paving the way for a more inclusive future. Listen to the full episode to learn more about the inspiring work of the 15% Pledge and its mission to drive positive change in the retail industry.
