OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced the upcoming launch of its new reasoning AI model, o3 mini. CEO Sam Altman shared that the finalized version will be released in a few weeks. The Microsoft-supported organization has taken user feedback into consideration and plans to release the application programming interface (API) alongside ChatGPT, as mentioned by Altman in a social media post.
Last year, OpenAI revealed that it was developing reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, putting it in competition with companies like Google’s Alphabet to create more advanced models capable of solving complex problems. The plan was to introduce o3 mini by the end of January, followed by the full o3 model, with the aim of outperforming existing models and attracting new investments and users.
In September 2024, OpenAI launched the o1 AI models, which were designed to tackle challenging problems by spending more time processing queries. These models excel in reasoning through complex tasks, including those in science, coding, and math, as highlighted in a blog post by the company.
The newly developed o3 and o3 mini models are expected to be even more powerful than the previous o1 models, according to previous statements by OpenAI. Additionally, the company recently introduced a beta feature called Tasks to ChatGPT, signaling its entry into the virtual assistant market, where it will compete with the likes of Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
The initial release of ChatGPT in late 2022 led to a surge in investments in AI companies, with its popularity and subsequent product launches contributing to OpenAI securing a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
