OpenAI, a company with over $4 billion in initial capital, is launching a new venture called the OpenAI Deployment Company. This venture aims to help organizations implement and scale artificial intelligence within their operations. One of the key components of this endeavor is the acquisition of AI consulting firm Tomoro, which will provide immediate staffing for the new company.

The OpenAI Deployment Company will place AI deployment engineers directly within client organizations, working alongside their existing teams to identify and capitalize on the most valuable opportunities for artificial intelligence. OpenAI will retain majority ownership and control of the venture.

As part of the acquisition of Tomoro, the new unit will gain access to approximately 150 engineers and specialists in AI deployment. These professionals will be ready to support the organization as soon as the venture is launched. Tomoro, established in 2023 in collaboration with OpenAI, boasts clients such as Mattel, Red Bull, Tesco, and Virgin Atlantic.

Nineteen firms have joined OpenAI in this venture, forming a long-term partnership structure. Leading the group is TPG, with Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield serving as co-lead founding partners.

This move by OpenAI comes as the company shifts its focus towards coding tools and enterprise customers. Recognizing the success of rival Anthropic in the enterprise space, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, emphasized the importance of prioritizing productivity for business customers. The company has also placed engineers with consulting firms and corporate partners as part of its broader enterprise strategy.

Previous reports from Reuters had hinted at joint ventures involving OpenAI and Anthropic, both backed by private equity, seeking acquisitions of firms specializing in business AI deployment.

In conclusion, the launch of the OpenAI Deployment Company signifies a strategic shift for OpenAI towards serving enterprise clients with AI solutions. This move is backed by significant financial support and a strong partnership with leading firms in the industry. With the acquisition of Tomoro, the new venture is well-positioned to support organizations in their AI adoption and scaling efforts.
