OpenAI has recently introduced o3-pro, their latest and most advanced AI model to date. This new iteration is an enhancement of OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model, which was initially launched earlier this year. Unlike traditional AI models, reasoning models like o3-pro work through problems systematically, making them more reliable in fields such as physics, mathematics, and coding.

Starting this week, o3-pro is accessible for ChatGPT Pro and Team users, replacing the previous o1-pro model. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access the following week, while o3-pro is already live in OpenAI’s developer API. Pricing for o3-pro is set at $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens within the API. To put this into perspective, a million input tokens equate to approximately 750,000 words, slightly longer than the novel “War and Peace.”

In expert evaluations, o3-pro has consistently outperformed o3 in various categories, particularly in crucial domains like science, education, programming, business, and writing assistance. Reviewers have praised o3-pro for its clarity, comprehensiveness, instruction-following, and accuracy. The model is equipped with various tools that enable it to search the web, analyze files, reason about visual inputs, utilize Python, personalize responses using memory, and more. However, responses from o3-pro may take longer to generate compared to the previous model.

Despite its strengths, o3-pro does have some limitations. Temporary chats with the model in ChatGPT are currently disabled due to a technical issue, and o3-pro is unable to generate images or support Canvas, OpenAI’s AI-powered workspace feature. Nonetheless, o3-pro has demonstrated impressive performance in popular AI benchmarks. In AIME 2024, which assesses a model’s mathematical abilities, o3-pro surpasses Google’s top-performing AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro. Additionally, o3-pro outperforms Anthropic’s recently launched Claude 4 Opus in GPQA Diamond, a test of PhD-level scientific knowledge.

Overall, the introduction of o3-pro marks a significant advancement in OpenAI’s AI capabilities, showcasing improved performance and versatility across various domains. With its enhanced features and capabilities, o3-pro is set to make a significant impact in the AI landscape.
