OpenAI is starting off the new year with another exciting acquisition. This time, the AI giant is bringing on board the team behind Convogo, a business software platform that specializes in automating and enhancing leadership assessments and feedback reporting for executive coaches, consultants, talent leaders, and HR teams.
Although OpenAI is not acquiring Convogo’s IP or technology, they are bringing on board the three co-founders – Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett – in an all-stock deal to work on their “AI cloud efforts.” As part of this acquisition, Convogo’s product will be phased out.
Convogo’s journey began as a “weekend hackathon” inspired by a question from Cooper’s mother, an executive coach, who wanted to streamline report writing using AI tools. Over the past two years, Convogo has made a significant impact, assisting thousands of coaches and partnering with top leadership development firms globally.
The team at Convogo realized that the key challenge lies in translating the possibilities of new AI models into tangible real-world outcomes. They believe that creating purpose-built experiences is crucial in bridging this gap, which is why they are excited to join OpenAI to continue their mission of making AI accessible and valuable across industries.
This acquisition marks OpenAI’s ninth in the past year, showcasing their focus on talent and capability acceleration through M&A. While most of the acquired products have been integrated into OpenAI’s ecosystem or discontinued, the collaboration with Jonny Ive’s io Products stands out as they continue to work on AI hardware development.
Overall, the Convogo acquisition highlights OpenAI’s commitment to innovation and growth in the AI space. It’s evident that M&A plays a significant role in shaping the future of AI technology, with companies like OpenAI leveraging acquisitions to enhance their offerings and drive industry advancements.
