OpenAI’s Next Major Product: A Compact, Screenless AI Device
OpenAI made waves in the tech world with its advancements in generative AI technology. However, the company is now setting its sights on a new kind of AI device that could revolutionize the way we interact with technology.
According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed to employees that their next major product will not be a wearable device. Instead, it will be a compact, screenless device that is fully aware of its user’s surroundings. Altman described it as a “third core device” alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone, positioning it as an “AI companion” that seamlessly integrates into daily life.
This announcement comes on the heels of OpenAI’s acquisition of io, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, in a $6.5 billion equity deal. Ive will play a crucial role in the creative and design aspects of the new device.
Altman believes that this new device has the potential to disrupt the market and create a new category of devices unlike anything currently available. He even suggested that the acquisition of io could add $1 trillion in market value to OpenAI.
Secrecy is paramount for Altman, as he emphasized the need to keep details of the device under wraps to prevent competitors from copying it before launch. A leaked recording of his remarks to employees raises concerns about internal trust and the level of disclosure moving forward.
