Oprah Winfrey is overjoyed by her best friend’s achievement.
The billionaire, 71, was moved to tears as her BFF Gayle King embarked on a journey to space on the Blue Origin mission. Joining her were five others, including Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos’s fiancée, Lauren Sánchez.
Winfrey, who was present at the launch site in West Texas, explained to a reporter during the live broadcast that she wore yellow as a tribute to King, 70, whom she referred to as “sunshine.”
Reflecting on their almost 50-year friendship, Winfrey expressed her immense pride in the “CBS Mornings” anchor.
“This is more than just a space journey for her,” Winfrey remarked. “She has real anxiety when flying, so this is about overcoming a significant fear and barrier.”
“I believe this experience will be cathartic for her,” Winfrey added.
She further explained that she encouraged King to take this space journey as part of personal growth and self-expression.
“I felt strongly that she would regret not going, and I didn’t want her to have that regret,” Winfrey shared. “I told her, ‘There’s only one first time all women are going up together. Be a pioneer.'”
Before the launch, Winfrey reassured King with comforting words, “Peace be still. Hold to God’s unchanging hand. He’s got your back.”
As the reporter inquired about King’s visible fear before the flight, Winfrey emphasized the significance of this experience for all the women on board.
“For Gayle, it’s about conquering fear and embracing excitement. This journey transcends the moment of space travel; it’s an everlasting experience,” Winfrey explained.
Following the flight, King expressed her awe and reflection on the experience of being in space.
“It’s oddly quiet up there. Peaceful. Looking down at the planet makes you ponder about doing better, being better,” King shared with a reporter.
