Orcas Caught French Kissing: A New Behavior Unveiled

Recently, orcas have been showcasing some rather peculiar behaviors that seem to mimic human habits. From wearing dead salmon as hats to now engaging in what can only be described as ‘French kissing’, these marine mammals continue to surprise us with their antics.

The intimate moment between two wild orcas was captured by citizen scientists in Norway’s Kvænangen fjords. The observers were stunned to witness the orcas, scientifically known as Orcinus orca, nibbling on each other’s tongues in a seemingly affectionate manner. Could it be that these whales had indulged in some kelp grooming prior to their rendezvous?

Marine scientist Javier Almunia and his team from the Loro Parque Foundation described the interaction as lasting nearly two minutes and involving gentle, face-to-face oral contact between the orcas.

This behavior, although previously observed in captive orcas, had never been documented in the wild before. A 2019 study recorded a similar ‘gentle tongue bite’ pattern among captive orcas, where one animal touches the other’s tongue with its teeth without causing harm.

Beluga whales, also known as Delphinapterus leucas, have exhibited mouth-to-mouth interactions in the wild as well. Studies on captive belugas revealed that kissing behaviors were often initiated by younger animals, suggesting playful behavior that helps in developing motor and social skills.

Despite the unusual nature of these interactions, neither the orcas nor the belugas displayed any signs of aggression. Researchers speculate that these behaviors could be a way for the marine mammals to maintain social bonds, engage in social grooming similar to primates, or even exhibit a form of begging behavior.

Distinct orca cultures, characterized by behaviors such as kelp or pebble grooming and regional dialects, highlight the complexity of these magnificent creatures. Some orca pods have even developed unique habits, like attacking sailing yachts in the Mediterranean.

While the true purpose behind an orca’s kiss remains a mystery, these recent discoveries only emphasize how much we have yet to learn about the fascinating animals that share our planet.

This research findings were published in the journal Oceans.
