In a courageous display, Otago fell short against Taranaki with a 22-18 loss in New Plymouth. The visiting team put up a strong defensive effort, keeping their opponents at bay for most of the game. However, Taranaki managed to breach their defense in the final quarter, capitalizing on a couple of late yellow cards shown to Otago players.

Despite the loss, Otago earned a valuable bonus point that could prove crucial in their playoff aspirations. The game took a toll on the team, with key players like Finn Hurley and Fabian Holland picking up injuries.

Otago’s Jona Nareki made a crucial tackle to prevent a potential try by his Highlanders teammate early in the game. Although Taranaki took the lead with a penalty, Otago responded with a try by Nareki after a strong attacking phase.

The first half saw both teams exchanging penalties, with Otago holding a narrow lead at halftime. Taranaki fought back in the second half, regaining the lead with a penalty and a try. Otago responded with a try of their own by Saula Ma’u, but ultimately succumbed to Taranaki’s late surge.

Despite late chances to turn the game around, Otago’s handling errors cost them the match. The game ended with Taranaki securing a hard-fought victory.

In the end, Taranaki emerged victorious with a score of 22-18, with tries from Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens and Ricky Riccitelli. Otago’s points came from tries by Jona Nareki and Saula Ma’u, along with penalties and a conversion by Cameron Millar.

Overall, it was a closely contested match that showcased the determination and resilience of both teams in the NPC competition.
