The Oura Ring 4 is perhaps the most crucial smart ring for Oura, especially with an increasing number of competitors emerging.

This heightened competition, led by products like the Samsung Galaxy Ring alongside others such as the Ultrahuman, RingConn, and Circular, indicates that Oura can no longer claim exclusivity in the smart ring arena.

To stay ahead, Oura has revamped the ring’s design, promising enhanced accuracy in tracking, new metrics for improved daily decision-making, and a longer-lasting battery compared to the Gen 3 model.

As a continuous user of the Oura Ring Gen 3 and having tried nearly every other smart ring on the market, the Ring 4 serves as a testament to what Oura does well that its competitors have yet to achieve.

Design & Build

  • Offered in six vibrant color finishes
  • Increased titanium content in its construction
  • Introduction of a new Ceramic model
  • Discreet sensor placement

The aesthetic appeal of the Oura Ring continues with the Ring 4, available in a total of six finishes: silver, black, brushed silver, stealth, gold, and rose gold. Silver and black are the most affordable options, while gold and rose gold are priced higher.

Update October 2025: A new Ceramic variant has been introduced, available in four colors: Cloud, Tide, Petal, and Midnight. Made from zirconia ceramic, it is lightweight yet boasts impressive durability, rated at 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.

This Ceramic version offers a playful and colorful alternative, a rarity among brands. Users can mix and match multiple Oura Ring 4s to suit different outfits. However, Oura cautions that the ceramic finish can pick up colors from soft metals like cookware.

A notable modification is the etching on the ring’s exterior, reminding users to wear it with the sensors against the inside of their finger, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Ring approach, which, while functional, disrupts the otherwise streamlined design.

The sensors on the underside are now better integrated within a fully titanium-encased interior, making the ring less obtrusive and notably more comfortable compared to the Oura Ring Gen 3.

Only the fully circular design is available now, aligning it with other smart rings. Yet, with its unique finishes, the Oura Ring maintains a distinctive flair that sets it apart, satisfying existing Oura customers.

Scratches can still occur, an issue Oura now acknowledges on its website, indicating this is normal with regular use. While not as scratch-prone as the Ultrahuman smart ring, the Samsung Galaxy Ring has shown superior durability against wear.

For sizing, acquiring a sizing kit is recommended as the Ring 4’s new design may alter the fit compared to the Gen 3. I found my size remains the same, but that could vary for others since changes have occurred in its structure and design.

Additionally, the Ring 4 boasts an expanded size range from four to 15, whereas the Gen 3 only offered sizes six to 13. Oura advises testing a ring for at least 24 hours, as finger sizes can fluctuate throughout the day.

The aesthetic appeal of the Oura Ring is largely attributed to its stylish design, which remains unblemished with the Ring 4.

Health & Performance Tracking

  • Tracks sleep, steps, stress levels, and heart health
  • Upgraded sensor configuration
  • Subscription required for comprehensive insights

Essentially, the Oura Ring 4 tracks similar metrics as its predecessor and other smart rings, but to access the full range of insights, you must subscribe monthly or annually.

New metrics have been added alongside a revamped optical sensor array that enhances tracking accuracy. Oura also claims improved monitoring for various skin tones, finger shapes, and changes in ring position.

The ring tracks your steps, sleep, stress levels, temperature, daily heart rate, and is designed to promote Oura’s Readiness metric, indicating whether you’re fit to tackle a busy day or need to take it easy.

The utility of the Readiness metric hinges on the accuracy of the data it relies on, necessitating precise heart rate, sleep, and activity tracking for it to be relevant.

Previous issues with heart rate monitoring during exercise on the Oura Ring Gen 3 have seen improvements, particularly in tracking heart rate accurately during physical activity and compensating for when sensors are misaligned.

For exercise tracking, while the Oura Ring can reliably auto-detect activities and lets you log workout heart rates when prompted, I maintain some reservations about its accuracy compared to dedicated heart rate monitors. It performed well during steady-paced workouts but may struggle with high-intensity interval training.

The ability to link with Strava enhances its functionality, allowing users to track workouts more effectively using data from devices like Garmin or Apple Watch, which also lends further context to the Readiness metrics similar to Garmin’s Training Readiness insights.

Sleep tracking is one of Oura’s strongest features, remaining a significant reason for its purchase appeal. In comparisons with the Samsung Galaxy Ring and Garmin devices, the data from Oura was robust and insightful.

Oura also monitors stress and resilience, offering insights into daily patterns of stress and underlying reasons for emotional fluctuations throughout the day.

In addition, features promoting healthy habits and providing deeper insights are included. For instance, you can engage in an experiment to lower caffeine intake, analyze your cardiovascular age, and utilize the symptom radar, which proved beneficial during initial tests with the Oura Ring Gen 3.

Cycle tracking functionality is present in the app, making Oura the sole smart ring manufacturer partnered with the FDA-approved Natural Cycles app, which could appeal to many potential customers.

Oura’s companion app has seen significant developments, becoming more user-friendly and engaging compared to its initial release, an area where other smart ring manufacturers often fall short.

Oura’s sleep tracking capabilities remain a prominent advantage, solidifying its appeal.

Power & Charging

  • Battery life extends up to 8 days
  • Utilizes a charging cradle
  • Charges fully in 90 minutes
  • A new charging case has been announced

Other smart rings currently outperform Oura in battery efficiency, with the RingConn Gen 2 lasting up to 12 days and the Samsung Galaxy Ring boasting a week between charges.

The Ring 4 can last up to eight days electrically, although individual results may vary depending on ring size and monitored features.

For my size 8 ring, I typically observed around five days of battery life, with a nightly usage drop of 14-15%, signifying the extensive data processing conducted overnight.

Enabling the blood oxygen tracking feature causes a more significant drop in battery life, but users opting out of this can enjoy spare battery lifetimes.

This represents a significant improvement compared to the Gen 3 model, which usually exceeded only a couple of days in similar circumstances. Though progress has been made, Oura does not lead in battery performance.

The ring charges on a cradle, which can take anywhere from 20-80 minutes based on battery levels. This charging time is constant with the previous model.

The charging cradle has a slightly more premium appearance, but portable charging cases offered by rivals like Galaxy Ring or RingConn Gen 2 provide a more convenient charging experience.

Update October 2025: Oura is set to release a portable charging case for the Ring 4, designed for mobility, capable of charging the ring five times. It can recharge in 90 minutes using USB-C, the same duration required for the ring. The case is composed of recycled aluminum and is priced at $99, launching later in 2025. You will need a matching case size for your Oura ring.

Cost & Availability

The Oura Ring 4 is obtainable straight from Oura’s official website, though shipping delays were noted by a Tech Advisor editor during the Gen 3 model purchase due to international sourcing.

For those avoiding potential delays, options include John Lewis in the UK, and Amazon and Best Buy in the US.

The Oura Ring 4 is among the pricier smart rings available, especially considering the required subscription. The silver and black models retail for £349/$349, while brushed silver and stealth finishes are available at £399/$399. The gold and rose gold versions carry the highest price of £499/$499. To access additional features, there’s also a subscription option priced at $5.99 per month or $69.99 annually, which can accumulate costs.

The newly released Ceramic editions revealed in October 2025 are priced at £499/$499.

Comparatively, the Samsung Galaxy Ring stands as Oura’s primary competitor with a one-off price of $399.99, free from subscription obligations. Other rivals without subscription models include the Ultrahuman Ring Air (£329/$349), Circular Smart Ring Slim (£226/$264), and RingConn Gen 2 ($299/around £225).

Also, the Oura Ring Gen 3 is still available at £249/$249, making it a more affordable option without the additional subscription.

Is the Oura Ring 4 Worth Purchasing?

If you’re searching for a stylish smart ring that’s comfortable for continuous wear and provides engaging data, the Oura Ring 4 stands out in its category.

For current users of the Oura Ring Gen 3, the key enhancements lie in improved battery life, better heart rate monitoring, and a more comfortable fit with less prominent sensors. Additionally, it’s likely to receive support for a more extended period due to its recent release.

However, the Oura Ring 4 isn’t flawless. The RingConn Gen 2 outshines it with enhanced battery life, and other smart rings may offer essential metrics without incurring additional subscription fees.

Ultimately, while the Oura Ring 4 isn’t perfect across all metrics, its strengths in many areas make it the best smart ring currently available.
