Alderman Brendan Reilly of River North is not holding back following a tragic incident where 18 people were shot outside a lounge in the neighborhood. The venue in question, Artis Lounge located at 311 West Chicago Avenue, was the site of another mass shooting back in 2022. Four individuals lost their lives in the drive-by shooting that took place during a BYOB record release party by rap artist Mello Buckzz. Evidence at the scene indicated that multiple individuals were involved in firing shots, as shell casings from three different calibers were recovered.
The victims of the shooting were identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Leon Andrew Henry, Aviance King, Taylor Walker, and Devonte Williamson. Mello Buckzz, the rapper hosting the event, expressed deep sorrow on social media, mentioning that one of the deceased was her boyfriend.
However, further investigation into Mello Buckzz’s social media revealed connections to a street gang faction known as No Limit Muskegon Boys, leading authorities to believe that the shooting may have been gang-related. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing incident, showing the moment the shots were fired.
In response to the tragedy, Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Meanwhile, CPD Supt. Larry Snelling has issued a summary closure notice for Artis Lounge until a thorough review of its operations is conducted.
The lounge, which only recently opened, had marketed itself as a “safe space” and proudly Black-, Brown-, Queer-, and Women-owned. However, Alderman Brendan Reilly has publicly stated that the owners of Artis misled the city about their true intentions for the venue. Reilly is advocating for the permanent closure of Artis, citing the owners’ failure to uphold their initial promises of supporting local artisans and fostering inclusivity.
The location of Artis Lounge was previously occupied by Hush nightclub, which was shut down by the city following a mass shooting in 2022. Reilly emphasized the need for reforms in liquor licensing processes and regulations to address the recurring issue of violence in nightlife establishments.
In a letter addressing the shooting and Artis’ operations, Reilly expressed his deep concern for the safety of the neighborhood and vowed to work towards ensuring that the business does not reopen. He called for immediate action to revoke the business license and permanently close the establishment.
As the investigation into the tragic incident continues, Reilly assured the community that he will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The focus remains on seeking justice for the victims and their families while striving for a safer environment for all residents.
