Senators Durbin and another witness testify at a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill, with a countdown timer for a government shutdown visible.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi didn’t hold back during a heated Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this morning, skillfully countering an uncomfortable question from Senator Dick Durbin, who seems more inclined toward theatrics than substance.

As highlighted by CNN, this session followed a grand jury’s indictment of former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly misleading Congress, amid the controversial deployment of National Guard troops to several struggling Democrat-run cities around the country.

Senator Durbin (D-IL), notably disturbed by the presence of federal troops in Chicago, branded their deployment as “unlawful” and pressed Bondi for details about any private conversations she may have had with the White House prior to this military action.

It appeared that Durbin aimed to trap Bondi, using her response as ammunition against the Trump Administration.

“Were you consulted by the White House before they deployed National Guard troops to cities in the United States?” he inquired.

Anticipating his line of questioning, Bondi deftly responded, “I’m not going to discuss any internal conversations with the White House.”

Durbin, undeterred and apparently intent on playing a game of political hot potato, pressed further. “Why do you want to keep this secret from the American people about the deployment of National Guard troops to my state… What is the rationale for that?”

Bondi, however, was not about to be bested by Durbin’s overzealous questioning. She countered with straightforward facts that were surely not what Durbin had in mind.

“As you voted to shut down the government, and you’re sitting here, our law enforcement officers aren’t being paid,” she asserted. “They’re out there working to protect you.”

With a touch of pointed irony, she added, “I wish you loved Chicago as much as you hate President Trump. Currently, the National Guard is on the way to Chicago.”

She concluded with a remark that suggested a fracture within state priorities, “If you’re not going to protect your citizens, President Trump will.”

As Durbin began to grumble about her responses, Bondi didn’t hold back. “The National Guard is on the way as we speak!” she told him. “So is Director Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.”

“You’re sitting here grilling me, and they are on their way to Chicago, to keep your state safe!” she emphasized, drawing attention to a critical and perhaps troubling irony in their conversation.

Bondi highlighted the pressing need for federal action by citing a stark statistic: “571 homicides last year in Chicago. If you were serious about protecting your people, you’d be asking this administration for help.” This stark reminder serves to question the adequacy of local decision-making in the face of escalating violence.
