Saori Matsushita, a talented artist based in Seattle, creates stunning ceramic pieces that mimic the appearance of folded paper. From vases to mugs to sculptures, Matsushita’s work is a testament to her skill and creativity in transforming delicate sheets of porcelain into intricate and unique pieces of art.

Using the traditional Japanese pottery technique of nerikomi, Matsushita layers colored bodies of clay together and then cuts them to reveal a patterned section. This method allows her to create pieces that feature stripes of blue and pink, reminiscent of the iconic blue lines of a school notebook. By treating porcelain sheets like origami or leather, Matsushita is able to craft vessels that capture the folds, bends, and bulges of fabric in ceramic form.

When Matsushita transitioned to using the nerikomi technique in 2023, it marked a significant shift in her practice and ultimately led to the development of her signature style. She describes this shift as a way to create more unique and personal expressions of her vision, allowing her to establish a style that truly reflects her individuality as an artist.

One of Matsushita’s pieces will be featured in Saltstone Ceramics’ annual Mug Madness tournament this March, showcasing her talent and creativity to a wider audience. To stay updated on her latest works and announcements, you can follow Matsushita on Instagram and visit her online shop.

From ceramic butter dishes that appear to be made of graph paper to vases shaped like dresses, Matsushita’s work challenges the boundaries of what is possible with clay. Her pieces are not only functional but also serve as works of art that blur the line between paper and ceramic.
