Paramount Skydance has recently announced the appointment of Rene Augustine, a former Trump administration attorney, as its senior vice president of global public policy. This decision comes amidst a heated takeover battle for Warner Bros Discovery, with Paramount and Netflix vying for control of the entertainment giant.
Augustine, who previously served in the Trump administration as a special assistant to the president and senior associate counsel in the office of White House Counsel, will be joining Paramount Skydance on February 17. Reporting to Chief Legal Officer Makan Delrahim, Augustine will be responsible for developing strategic policies that advance the company’s business objectives and building key diplomatic relationships on a global scale.
Delrahim, a former senior U.S. antitrust official, has previously worked with Augustine at the Department of Justice, the Senate, and the White House. Augustine herself has an impressive background, having served as deputy assistant attorney general in the antitrust division of the Justice Department from 2019 to 2021.
The battle for Warner Bros has intensified, with Paramount recently sweetening its bid by offering investors $650 million in extra cash for each quarter the deal fails to close after this year. Additionally, Paramount has agreed to cover the $2.8 billion breakup fee that Netflix would owe if it were to walk away from the deal.
On the other hand, Netflix has made its own offer to Warner Bros shareholders, proposing to pay $27.75 per share in cash for the film and television studios, the extensive library, and the HBO Max streaming service. This sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown between the two entertainment giants.
As the industry watches this takeover battle unfold, it is clear that the appointment of Rene Augustine at Paramount Skydance signals a strategic move to strengthen the company’s position in the global market. With her expertise and experience in public policy, Augustine is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Paramount Skydance amidst this intense competition.
