The Olympics may have ended in mid-August, but the excitement in Paris is far from over. The city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, recently announced that the iconic Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower, much to the delight of many Parisians. Hidalgo expressed her desire to keep the festive spirit alive and made it clear that as the mayor of Paris, the decision is hers to make.

However, not everyone is on board with Hidalgo’s decision. A Change.org petition has already gained over 38,000 signatures demanding the removal of the rings once the Paralympics conclude. Even the descendants of Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who designed the tower, have voiced their opposition to the move. They believe that the Eiffel Tower should not be permanently associated with any external organization and should not serve as an advertising platform.

The Olympic rings, which measure 95 feet wide and 43 feet tall, were installed in July before the start of the Olympics. Originally, the plan was to take them down in September. However, keeping the rings on the tower will require more work than initially anticipated. The current fixture is too heavy to remain on the monument long-term, so it will need to be replaced with a lighter version.

Pierre Rabadan, Paris’ deputy mayor, explained that many questions still need to be addressed as the original rings were not built to be permanent. The city plans to bring them down and create new, lighter rings to keep on the tower for a longer period of time. This decision has sparked a debate among residents, with some welcoming the colorful addition to the iconic landmark and others viewing it as a defacement of a historic monument.

The Eiffel Tower, originally built for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, has come a long way since its inception. Initially criticized by artists and writers for its unconventional design, the tower is now celebrated as the city’s most recognizable landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the debate over the Olympic rings continues, France’s culture minister, Rachida Dati, is urging officials to proceed with caution and ensure that any changes comply with heritage regulations.

The decision to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower has sparked mixed reactions among Parisians, highlighting the challenge of balancing tradition with modernity. Whether the rings will remain a permanent fixture on the iconic monument or be taken down remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the Eiffel Tower will continue to captivate visitors from around the world with its timeless beauty and charm.
