Parolee Charged with Attempted Murder in Connection with Howard CTA Station Shooting

CHICAGO — A recent incident near the Howard CTA station has resulted in charges of attempted murder against a parolee, Kevin Humes. Humes is accused of shooting at two men as they fled from a murder scene that occurred on October 23 in the 1600 block of West Howard. Interestingly, both of the men Humes allegedly shot at also face charges related to the shooting.

The entire incident was captured on video, providing crucial evidence for the case.

Reynolds

According to official complaints and detention petitions, Latrell Reynolds, 20, and Clifford Murphy, 18, were walking east on Howard Street when they encountered 29-year-old Marlon Scott around 3 p.m. A physical altercation ensued, resulting in Scott’s fatal injuries. As Reynolds and Murphy attempted to leave the scene, Humes, who was nearby, allegedly fired a weapon at them.

Video footage shows Reynolds and Murphy being shot during or immediately after the altercation. Reynolds sustained gunshot wounds to his shoulder and leg, while Murphy was found with a through-and-through gunshot wound that entered his back and exited his chest. Murphy was also in possession of a firearm equipped with an auto-fire switch, categorized as a machine gun.

Humes now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful weapon possession as a felon. Reynolds is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery, while Murphy faces charges of unlawful use of a machine gun.

Despite the severity of the charges, Reynolds was released on electronic monitoring, while Murphy was also granted release to await trial.

Records indicate that Humes has a history of firearm-related offenses and felony narcotics charges dating back to the late 1990s. Notably, no one has been charged with the murder of Marlon Scott, the initial victim in the altercation.

The incident adds to a troubling trend in the area, with multiple shootings reported near the 1600 block of West Howard over the past two years. Authorities have only filed charges in a small number of cases, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in the area.
