Argentine filmmaker Paula Hernández, known for her work on “The Sleepwalkers” and “Las siamesas,” has been announced as the director and co-writer of the upcoming project series titled “Duarte. Evita behind the Icon.” This series is being produced by Kapow, a prominent production company based in Buenos Aires, known for its involvement in successful projects like “La Jauría.”
Scheduled for a 2025 second-half shoot, “Duarte” is set to be a 5-episode, 60-minute series that delves into the early years of Eva Duarte, famously known as Evita, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Domingo Perón. The project is currently in development and is one of the highlights at the 2024 Co-Production and Financing Forum, part of the Iberseries & Platino Industria event in Madrid.
Produced by Kapow’s Agustín Sacanell, Lucas Rainelli, and Diego Ventura, “Duarte” aims to offer a glimpse into Duarte’s personal journey while also exploring the societal transformation in Argentina during that era. The script for the series has been penned by Paula Hernández, alongside Leonel D’Agostino and Pablo Giorgelli.
Paula Hernández, an accomplished director with seven feature films to her credit, has a track record of presenting her work at major film festivals. Her film “The Sleepwalkers” received critical acclaim and was Argentina’s submission for the 2020 Oscars, while “Las siamesas” earned her a nomination at the Goya Awards in 2022.
Kapow’s Diego Ventura expressed the importance of revisiting the story of Eva Duarte in the current context of gender equality and feminism. He highlighted the series’ focus on portraying Duarte’s journey as a woman who strived for her rights and beliefs without conforming to societal norms.
In a bid to enhance the project’s global reach, Kapow is in the final stages of closing a co-production deal with a major English distributor and a Spanish production company. This strategic partnership aims to bring “Duarte” to a wider audience and elevate its impact on an international scale.
Kapow, established in 2003, has a reputation for developing content that resonates globally. Their diverse portfolio includes successful projects like “Estocolmo,” Argentina’s first Netflix series, “The President,” an Amazon Original series, and the popular cooking show “Argentine Cooks” on Argentina’s TV Pública.
Diego Ventura emphasized Kapow’s collaborative approach and their continuous efforts to forge partnerships that strengthen their projects. He underscored the importance of their associative model, which focuses on building alliances and retaining intellectual property rights to maximize the potential of their content.
As “Duarte” gears up for production, the collaboration between Kapow and their partners promises to deliver a compelling series that sheds light on the remarkable life of Eva Duarte and her enduring legacy in Argentine history.
