The Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion was the target of a disturbing incident on Passover, as Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were forced to evacuate the residence after a man set it on fire. The suspected arsonist, identified as 38-year-old Cody Balmer from Harrisburg, PA, was swiftly apprehended by authorities.

Reports indicate that Balmer scaled a fence onto the property and forcibly entered the Governor’s Residence before igniting the blaze. Photos of the aftermath show significant damage to a large gathering room in the residence, with charred remnants and ashes strewn across the floor. Governor Shapiro expressed gratitude that he, his wife, their four children, two dogs, and guests who had joined them for Passover were safely evacuated by state troopers in the early hours of the morning.

Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo has announced that Balmer will face charges of attempted murder, terrorism, attempted arson, and aggravated assault. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, Governor Shapiro hinted at a possible anti-Semitic motivation, stating, “I refuse to be trapped by the bondage that someone attempted to put on me by attacking us as they did last night.”

In a public address outside the residence, Governor Shapiro condemned the act of violence and emphasized the need to combat political violence regardless of the perpetrator. The Governor’s strong stance against such incidents resonated with many, as he called for an end to the prevalence of violence in society.

This harrowing event serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and resilience in the face of senseless acts of aggression. Governor Shapiro’s response underscores the need for solidarity and a commitment to upholding peace and security for all residents of Pennsylvania.
