Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shared an update on Rodri’s fitness ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton on April 25. The Spanish player is dealing with a groin injury, which has cast doubt on his availability.

Rodri sustained the groin injury during Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, resulting in his absence from their subsequent 1-0 win over Burnley. He has been plagued by recurring injuries since an ACL injury sidelined him last season. With Manchester City competing for two titles, missing Rodri’s presence on the field would be a significant setback.

In a pre-match press conference before facing Southampton, Guardiola confirmed Rodri’s absence from the FA Cup semi-final. He stated (via Manchester Evening News):

“He’s better. Not taking risks. He won’t play. I don’t know if he will be back [before the Everton game]. Hopefully, but we don’t want to take risks because if he is injured he won’t be around in the last few games which is so important.”

Guardiola is hopeful that Rodri will return for the match against Everton on May 4. Manchester City has five Premier League matches remaining this season, each crucial in their intense title race with Arsenal. The two teams are level on points, with City leading the table. Both sides cannot afford to drop points in any of the remaining fixtures as the title race nears its conclusion.

In the same press conference, Guardiola discussed potential squad rotations for the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton. He remarked (via Manchester Evening News):

“The opponent is a question mark, the way we have to play. Arsenal game was so demanding, it is normal. Everyone was so tired, today they have to train. From here to the hotel. Tomorrow will be fantastic day. Many thoughts still in my mind and we will see tomorrow.”

The Sky Blues climbed to the top of the Premier League table following their victories over Arsenal and Burnley, marking the first time since August. However, Arsenal could reclaim the top spot if they defeat Newcastle on Saturday (April 25).

Having already secured the Carabao Cup this season, Manchester City aims to achieve a domestic treble by winning both the FA Cup and the Premier League. The title race is expected to continue until the final match day, with Arsenal remaining strong contenders, as they also prepare for the Champions League semi-finals against Atletico Madrid next week.
