In a compelling op-ed, U.S. Central Command Commander Adm. Brad Cooper recounts his recent experience aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Adm. Cooper highlights the remarkable commitment of American sailors, whose steadfast loyalty to their nation, mission, and one another characterizes one of the most demanding and significant naval deployments in recent history.
From The Wall Street Journal:
“The visit was truly impressive. I was deeply moved by this group of accomplished Americans, who stand with deserved pride for all they have achieved. During my time on the ship, I witnessed the challenging reality of more than 260 days at sea, including over 150 days in a combat zone, as I spoke with sailors in areas not usually seen by visitors.
Although recent media reports have offered various views on operational pace, crew morale, and the challenges faced by our deployed forces, my observations aboard the Lincoln revealed that many of these issues are no longer current.
I engaged with junior enlisted personnel and junior officers in small gatherings. Concerns regarding food, hot water, and other issues raised earlier had been addressed by leadership and resolved.
Though the crew is fatigued, they continue to perform exceptionally. This deployment will be remembered as one of the most operationally demanding and impactful of the modern era.”
