Tondero, Peru’s leading film production company helmed by Miguel Valladares, has established a new office in Madrid after successfully completing its fifth co-production in Spain. The project, titled “A Family” (“Una familia”), marks the directorial debut of the acclaimed Spanish actor and writer Ricardo Gómez (“Las aguas mansas”).
The opening of Tondero España paves the way for greater access to Spain’s film incentives and co-production agreements with other nations. Currently, Tondero is working on the development of two feature films and a streaming series.
This strategic expansion is in line with similar moves by other Latin American companies, including the recent establishment of Clara Films from Chile.
Recently, Tondero collaborated with Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo on “Ramón y Ramón,” directed by Salvador del Solar. This romantic drama premiered at the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival and was later released in theaters across Peru and Spain. Additionally, Tondero is developing a series with El Deseo and Infinity Hill centered around the 1996 hostage crisis at the Japanese embassy in Lima.
“A Family” boasts a talented production team, including El Desorden Crea, founded by the creator of “Élite,” Carlos Montero; Lágrimas Films, led by Diego Betancor (“Élite,” “Respira”); and Estela Films, directed by Félix Tusell (“El Trono”).
The project enjoys support from RTVE, Movistar Plus+, and financing from the ICAA and the Madrid regional government. Distribution will be managed by Filmax.
With filming set to commence soon, this initiative represents a significant move in Tondero’s ongoing strategy to foster creative partnerships in Spain.
“I’m genuinely thrilled about this project—not only because it tells a beautiful and deeply personal story by Ricardo Gómez, who shares his heartfelt narrative at such a young age, but also because I get to co-produce it with Diego Betancor, an incredible Spanish producer I’ve long admired. It’s a dream come true, and I couldn’t be more delighted. I believe we’ll make a fantastic team, and this strengthens my goal to introduce more Peruvian talent in Spain,” Valladares expressed to Variety. He has been in Madrid attending the 5th Iberseries & Platino Industria and participating in various meetings.
“A Family” intertwines three distinct stories within a single family: a former child star navigating the blur between fiction and reality, a prisoner enjoying a temporary release, and a woman feeling daunted during her child’s baptism. These narratives span different eras, delving into themes of identity, familial bonds, and life-altering choices.
