Sporting Kansas City made a major announcement on Monday, revealing that they have decided to part ways with Peter Vermes, who has been the head coach of the team for the past 15 years. This marks the end of Vermes’ tenure as the longest-serving head coach in MLS history.
The decision to part ways with Vermes comes after a string of disappointing results for Sporting Kansas City, including a recent 2-1 defeat to FC Dallas. The team currently sits at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with just one point from six games. Additionally, SKC was eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup in the first round after a 4-1 aggregate loss to Inter Miami in February.
In a statement released by the club, Vermes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead Sporting Kansas City for the past two decades. He thanked the ownership and all those involved with the club, and wished them the best for the future.
Vermes, who represented the U.S. at the 1990 World Cup as a player, first joined SKC in 2006 as the technical director before taking over as head coach on an interim basis in 2009. Under his leadership, the club achieved significant success, winning the MLS Cup in 2013 and three U.S. Open Cup titles between 2012 and 2017.
Following Vermes’ departure, Kerry Zavagnin, who served as an assistant coach under Vermes for the entirety of his tenure, will take over as the interim head coach.
Vermes’ impact on Sporting Kansas City was profound, as he oversaw a transformation of the team after a period of underperformance. He led the club to eight consecutive playoff appearances starting in 2011, winning multiple trophies along the way.
Despite his success, SKC experienced a downturn in form in recent years, missing the playoffs three times between 2019 and 2024. The team finished 14th in the Western Conference last season and has struggled to find their footing in the current campaign.
Vermes’ longevity at Sporting Kansas City is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the club. Over his 15-year tenure, he coached 609 games across all competitions, making him one of the longest-tenured head coaches in MLS history. His 17 seasons on the touchline for SKC are unmatched by any other coach in the league.
Looking ahead, Sporting Kansas City will be tasked with finding a new head coach to lead the team into a new era. Vermes’ departure marks the end of an era for the club, but his legacy and impact on Sporting Kansas City will not be forgotten. the perspective of a travel writer exploring the beauty and culture of a small town in Italy.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany, the charming town of Cortona beckons travelers with its picturesque landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. As a travel writer, I had the pleasure of exploring this hidden gem and immersing myself in its beauty and culture.
Upon arriving in Cortona, I was immediately struck by the town’s old-world charm. Cobblestone streets lined with charming cafes and boutiques wind their way up the hillside, leading to the town’s crown jewel, the Piazza della Repubblica. Here, locals gather to sip espresso and catch up on the day’s news, while tourists soak in the vibrant atmosphere and admire the stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
One of the highlights of my visit to Cortona was exploring its many historical sites. The town is home to several well-preserved Etruscan ruins, including the ancient city walls and the Etruscan Academy Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts dating back to the 6th century BC. I also had the opportunity to visit the Duomo di Cortona, a beautiful Renaissance church with stunning frescoes and a peaceful courtyard.
But perhaps the most memorable part of my time in Cortona was experiencing its vibrant culture. The town is known for its lively festivals and events, and I was fortunate enough to visit during the annual Cortona Mix Festival, a celebration of music, art, and culture that draws artists and performers from around the world. From traditional Italian folk music to contemporary art installations, the festival offered a glimpse into the creative spirit of this vibrant town.
Of course, no visit to Cortona would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The town is renowned for its delicious Tuscan fare, and I savored every bite of the hearty pasta dishes, fresh seafood, and decadent pastries that I sampled during my stay. I also had the chance to visit a local winery and learn about the region’s rich wine-making tradition, sipping on a glass of Chianti as I watched the sun set over the vineyards.
As I reluctantly said goodbye to Cortona, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place. From its breathtaking views to its rich history and warm hospitality, this small town in Italy had captured my heart and left me longing for more. I knew that I would always cherish the memories of my time in Cortona and eagerly look forward to my next visit to this enchanting destination.
