Philipp Plein Resort Collection 2021: A Maximalist Approach to Fashion
During a recent Zoom call from his villa in Cannes, Philipp Plein discussed how some people still crave maximalism and consistency in their fashion choices, even during times of crisis in the industry. For his resort collection, Plein drew inspiration from geometric tattoos, exploring different artists and old-school aesthetics to create a range of pieces that he described as “Philipp Plein classics; not too experimental, always very wearable.”
The collection featured symmetrical tattoo prints laser-etched onto denim trucker jackets and jorts, with shirts adorned with playful details like skull-shaped buttons. One of the standout elements was the introduction of bright colors, such as a shiny orange suit and crocodile-printed leather bomber, adding a vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of sand and chocolate brown. Colorful varsity jackets emblazoned with the names of cities where Plein has stores and denim pieces in various forms showcased the designer’s bold and eclectic aesthetic.
Sleek black tailoring embellished with studs in star shapes or multicolored tattoo-inspired patches, as well as biker jackets adorned with intricate embroideries of tattoos and contrasting silver or matte black studs, rounded out the collection. Plein’s attention to detail and commitment to bold, statement-making pieces were evident throughout the resort line.
