Photos released on Thursday reveal the devastation wrought by a Hezbollah-linked terrorist who drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a Michigan synagogue last week.
Images from Temple Israel in West Bloomfield show a hallway leading to the early childhood center completely destroyed, with charred floors and walls adorned with class photos. Other photos depict snacks left on small tables, likely abandoned by pre-K children during Ayman Ghazali’s attack.
Temple Israel shared on Facebook its initial reluctance to release these images following last Thursday’s attack, but felt compelled to do so after other footage was published, which they noted had harmed survivors of the incident.
Fortunately, none of the 140 staff and children present were injured when Ghazali crashed into the synagogue and drove through a hallway, triggering a gunfight with armed security officers.
The vehicle’s engine ignited, and Ghazali ultimately shot himself in the head, according to authorities. The dramatic incident unfolded just outside the early childhood center’s entrance.
Ghazali, who became a U.S. citizen in 2016 after arriving from Lebanon in 2011, carried out the attack shortly after family members in Lebanon were killed in an airstrike. The Israel Defense Forces indicated that at least one of his brothers was affiliated with Hezbollah.
While the synagogue’s director of security sustained injuries, Temple Israel officials reported that he is recovering.
The synagogue is now seeking funds to repair the damage inflicted by Ghazali and to support those affected by the traumatic event.
“Temple Israel was targeted. Our people were ready,” the synagogue stated on its website.
“They protected our children with courage, training, and extraordinary strength.”
