A tragic incident unfolded in a Queens housing project home where a 1-month-old baby girl was found dead. Initially, it was believed that the baby had been mauled to death by a pit bull puppy while her parents were asleep. However, the city medical examiner later revealed that the baby had died of unknown causes before the puppy bit her.
The New York City Office of the Medical Examiner clarified that the dog had bitten off a “substantial portion” of the baby’s face after she had already passed away. The cause and manner of death are still pending further study, including a full pediatric workup.
The heartbreaking discovery was made after the baby’s mother called 911 upon finding her daughter mauled by the dog. Neighbors reported hearing screams coming from the apartment before authorities arrived at the scene. The parents revealed that the baby had been sleeping between them when they woke up to find the dog gnawing on her face.
The baby, born on April 13, was pronounced dead at the scene. Images of the baby show her peacefully napping at the hospital and in her home before the tragic incident. The dog, described as a pit bull-German Shepherd puppy, was seen in photos at a city animal shelter.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed as of now. One neighbor recalled warning the mother about the dog needing to be on a leash, to which the mother responded that the dog doesn’t bite. The community is left in shock and mourning over the tragic loss of the young baby girl.
