Chicago Police Arrest Four Suspects Following Robbery Spree

A coordinated effort between Chicago police officers on the ground and in a helicopter led to the arrest of four suspects involved in a series of robberies reported on Wednesday evening spanning from the West Loop to Hyde Park. Detectives are currently investigating the extent of the suspects’ involvement in the reported crimes.

Starting around 9:15 p.m., a string of at least 11 robberies occurred, involving 14 or more victims before the suspects were apprehended over two hours later.

According to preliminary reports from the Chicago Police Department, in most of the robberies, two or three individuals wearing ski masks and dark clothing confronted victims on the street, often brandishing a handgun. Some victims witnessed the suspects fleeing in an SUV, while others reported seeing a sedan, and some did not observe any getaway vehicle.

The crime spree commenced at 9:15 p.m. when a woman and two companions were robbed at gunpoint of their wallets and phones in the 500 block of West Madison in the West Loop.

Subsequent robberies were reported minutes apart at locations including Morgan and 18th Street, Morgan and 16th Street, and the 100 block of South Aberdeen. Items stolen during these incidents included keys, wallets, phones, and a laptop.

Additional robberies were reported throughout the evening, including incidents in the 1600 block of West Cullerton, the 3300 block of South Lowe, the 1100 block of West Pershing, near 31st Street and Archer Avenue, the 4200 block of South Langley, the 4700 block of South Laflin, and the 5400 block of South Blackstone.

After a ground unit spotted a black Mitsubishi vehicle that had been seen near multiple robbery locations, a CPD helicopter crew began tracking the vehicle as it attempted to flee from police. The pursuit resulted in the apprehension of four suspects who abandoned the car in the 800 block of East 37th Street. A handgun was also recovered near the vehicle.

Investigators are currently working on linking the suspects to the robberies through lineup identifications, video evidence, and other investigative techniques.
