An investigation by the police is currently ongoing following the resignation of a staff member at one of New Zealand’s most esteemed schools due to “inappropriate online activity”. The individual, who was associated with football and boarding at King’s College, confessed to the activity, which the school confirmed on Monday, expressing concerns that it involved interaction with a minor.
King’s College released a statement stating that the staff member had resigned immediately. The school promptly informed the authorities, as well as parents and guardians, urging them to communicate with their children if they had any worries. Boarding students were also informed, with the school providing pastoral care services for support.
It was emphasized by King’s College that the inappropriate online behavior did not involve any of the school’s students, and they were unaware of any student’s involvement. This incident was the first time any concerns had been raised about the staff member’s conduct, according to the school.
Prior to his tenure at King’s College, the individual had briefly worked as a contractor at Selwyn College in 2021, as disclosed by Selwyn College principal Sheryll Ofner. She stated that the man had worked in a limited capacity at Selwyn and mentioned that they would cooperate with the police if necessary due to the ongoing investigation.
Confirmation of an investigation was provided by a police spokesperson following a complaint received by Counties Manukau police on Monday. However, no further details could be disclosed at this early stage of the investigation.
The Ministry of Education clarified that they had not been approached by the school for assistance. King’s College declined to provide additional comments on Tuesday due to the ongoing police investigation.
