Police minister never saw 36 emails containing allegations about Jevon McSkimming

The police minister has revealed that emails regarding allegations against Jevon McSkimming were withheld from him by former commissioner Andrew Coster’s office.

An IPCA report released recently accuses Coster and other high-ranking police officials of neglecting to take appropriate action on claims of sexual misconduct by McSkimming, the former deputy commissioner.

Despite 36 emails being sent to Police Minister Mark Mitchell’s office since December 2023, he claims he never saw them due to a protocol established by the Commissioner’s office. Mitchell was only briefed by Coster on 6 November about the IPCA investigation involving McSkimming and a woman, with no indication of any senior leadership interference.

The report refers to the woman as Ms. Z, who was charged last year for causing harm through digital communication after allegedly sending over 300 emails to McSkimming’s work address.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers expressed his shock at not being informed by Coster about the investigation into McSkimming, criticizing the former senior leadership for what he believes was a cover-up. Chambers denies systemic failure within the New Zealand police but points to a failure of the former leadership’s integrity and self-interest.

Coster has been placed on leave following the report’s findings of serious misconduct at the highest police levels. The report highlights senior police officials’ failure to address complaints against McSkimming, with Coster allegedly attempting to expedite the investigation to protect McSkimming’s potential promotion to Commissioner of Police.

Chambers expressed relief that the former leadership has departed from the police force and confirmed that three individuals’ employment is under independent investigation. He reassured the public of their trust and confidence in the police force’s integrity and commitment to justice for victims.

Despite the recent scandal, Chambers emphasized the dedication and professionalism of his investigators and police officers. He urged victims to come forward without fear of repercussions and emphasized the progress made by the police force over the years.

The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within law enforcement, ensuring that those in positions of power uphold the highest ethical standards for the benefit of the community.
