Microsoft made headlines on 20 September when it announced a groundbreaking 20-year deal to purchase energy from a dormant nuclear power plant that will be brought back online. This plant is none other than Three Mile Island, the site of the worst nuclear accident in US history back in 1979. The move showcases the increasing demand for clean energy to power technology giants’ growing artificial intelligence (AI) efforts.

The decision to revive Three Mile Island raises important questions about the safe restart of decommissioned nuclear plants. And Three Mile Island is not the only plant being resurrected. The Palisades Nuclear Plant in Michigan, which was shut down in 2022, is also set to reopen with the support of a substantial loan commitment from the US Department of Energy. This initiative aligns with the country’s ambitious climate goals and highlights the role of nuclear energy in reducing carbon emissions.

The revival of these plants presents a unique challenge, as safety checks and regulatory processes must be navigated to ensure their secure operation. Components of the plants will need to be inspected and replaced to meet safety standards. The plants’ turbine generators, which convert steam into electricity, will also require thorough examination after years of dormancy.

As these plants prepare for restart, operators will need to secure a fresh supply of nuclear fuel. The United States is working to reduce its reliance on international suppliers like Russia by investing in a domestic uranium supply chain. While the reopening of mothballed nuclear plants may be limited in the US, there is potential for new advanced reactors to be built on existing sites, leveraging infrastructure and transmission lines.

Overall, the resurgence of nuclear energy in the US reflects a shift towards low-carbon electricity generation to meet the demands of technology companies and support climate goals. The integration of nuclear power into the energy mix highlights the importance of diverse sources of clean energy for a sustainable future.
