The Powerball jackpot has reached a whopping $905 million after 42 drawings with no winner. The next drawing is scheduled for tonight, Aug. 10. The odds of winning such a jackpot are slim, with the chances being 1 in 292.2 million for Powerball, according to the lottery.

If you do happen to win, how much of the prize would you actually take home after taxes? The IRS taxes lottery prizes differently depending on how the winner chooses to receive the money. You have two options: a lump sum payout or annual payments spread out over 30 years. Most winners opt for the lump sum upfront, even though it means fewer dollars in their pocket initially.

For a large prize like the Powerball, the federal tax rate on any prize over $5,000 is 24%. If you choose the lump sum, you’ll also be catapulted into the highest income tax bracket, meaning you’ll pay the top federal tax rate of 37% the following year.

Alternatively, the annuity option provides the full $905 million pot over a longer period, with 24% taken off the top of each payment. You’ll also be in the highest federal income bracket, requiring you to pay any additional federal taxes owed beyond that withholding.

In addition to federal taxes, winners must also consider state taxes. The amount you’ll pay in state income taxes depends on where you reside, with rates varying from 2.5% to as high as 13.3%. However, some states, such as Alaska, Florida, and Texas, do not charge state tax on income.

If you were to win the $905 million Powerball jackpot and choose the lump sum, you would receive approximately $391.9 million upfront. After the 24% tax withholding and subsequent 37% federal tax rate, your winnings would amount to around $247 million. Opting for the annuity option would result in about $570 million after federal taxes.

To make the most of your winnings, experts recommend hiring a financial advisor and a tax attorney or accountant to manage your tax liabilities and investments wisely. Diversifying your banking strategy, paying off debts, investing wisely, growing your winnings through high-yield accounts, and establishing a charitable foundation are all sound strategies to secure a less stressful financial future.

In conclusion, winning the lottery can be life-changing, but it’s essential to plan carefully and seek professional advice to ensure your newfound wealth is managed responsibly and for long-term financial security.
