President Donald J. Trump has taken a strong stance against the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran by signing a National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM) aimed at restoring maximum pressure on Iran. The goal is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, neutralize its terrorist network, and counter its aggressive development of missiles and other weapons capabilities.

The NSPM directs the Secretary of the Treasury to impose maximum economic pressure on Iran by sanctioning individuals or entities that violate existing sanctions. Guidance will be issued to various business sectors, including shipping, insurance, and port operators, regarding the risks of violating U.S. sanctions related to Iran. The Secretary of State will work with the Treasury Secretary to implement a campaign to drive Iran’s oil exports to zero, while also seeking to complete the snapback of international sanctions and restrictions on Iran through cooperation with key allies.

The protection of the homeland from Iran’s threats is a top priority, with the Attorney General tasked with investigating and prosecuting financial and logistical networks, operatives, or front groups sponsored by Iran or its terror proxies within the United States. Leaders and members of Iranian-funded terrorist groups that have harmed American citizens will be pursued for prosecution and extradition to the U.S.

President Trump has made it clear that he will not allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapons capability or continue its sponsorship of terrorism against U.S. interests. The NSPM reaffirms the President’s commitment to addressing Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the Middle East and beyond, emphasizing that Iran has been the leading sponsor of terrorism and its pursuit of nuclear weapons poses a threat to the civilized world.

The actions taken by the Trump administration demonstrate a strong stance against Iran’s malign activities and a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the United States and its allies. The efforts to restore maximum pressure on Iran and prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon are crucial steps in countering Iran’s destabilizing influence in the region and beyond.
