The Trump Administration has made a definitive statement: there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. President Trump has reiterated this point multiple times, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to these programs (repeatedly and unwaveringly).

In a twist of irony, Elon Musk hasn’t suggested any cuts to these programs either, despite what some media outlets may claim. The accusations levelled against him are just another instance of misinformation.

What Musk actually said was this: “The waste and fraud in entitlement spending — which is most of the federal spending is entitlements — so, that’s, like, the big one to eliminate. That’s the, sort of half-trillion, maybe $6-700 billion a year.” And indeed, he raises a crucial point.

  • FACT: According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, taxpayers are losing up to $521 billion every year due to fraud, with a significant portion of this stemming from entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Source
  • FACT: In the last two decades, the federal government has made an astonishing $2.7 trillion in “improper payments.” A staggering proportion of these errors involve payments to individuals who are either deceased or no longer eligible for government assistance. Source
  • FACT: The Social Security Administration has reported making approximately $72 billion in improper payments from 2015 to 2022. Source
  • FACT: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services estimated over $140 billion in improper payments in 2024 alone. Source

This raises an essential question: who wouldn’t support efforts to eliminate inefficiency, fraud, and abuse in government spending that ultimately burdens taxpayers? The acknowledgment of waste in these programs is not merely a political talking point; it’s a necessary conversation about stewardship of public funds.
