This week, the Trump Administration is hosting the first-ever Fentanyl Free America Summit, uniting participants from across the nation to consolidate and boost the significant achievements made against one of the most lethal drug threats ever faced.

The Trump Administration’s exhaustive, multi-pronged approach — which includes enhancing border security, targeting transnational criminal gangs, and exerting intense pressure on international suppliers and narcoterrorists — has led to a dramatic and ongoing decline in fentanyl-related deaths.

Fentanyl Death Rate Declines Under President Trump:

  • Deaths caused by synthetic opioids (fentanyl) decreased by 22% in a year, from 48,913 in 2024 to 38,084 in 2025.
  • Overall drug overdose fatalities dropped by 14%, from 81,313 in 2024 to 69,973 in 2025.
  • The United States reported its lowest death rate on record in 2025, largely attributed to these significant reductions in drug-related deaths.

Dismantling the Fentanyl Supply Chain:

  • President Trump labeled major cartels, including Tren de Aragua, MS-13, and Sinaloa, as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, which enabled the use of strong sanctions, asset confiscations, and advanced legal tools to dismantle their networks.
  • President Trump enacted the HALT Fentanyl Act, which permanently classified fentanyl analogs as Schedule I drugs, closing loopholes that traffickers had been exploiting for years.
  • Illicit fentanyl and its primary precursors were designated as Weapons of Mass Destruction by President Trump, allowing for stricter penalties, broader seizure powers, and the application of national security resources to combat this threat.

Exerting Pressure on Foreign Suppliers:

  • President Trump implemented targeted fentanyl tariffs on China, which were later expanded to include Canada and Mexico, compelling Beijing to tighten its controls on 13 essential precursor chemicals.
  • President Trump eliminated the de minimis loophole, which stopped the influx of millions of uninspected packages that traffickers had been using to smuggle fentanyl precursors and finished products into the U.S.

Disrupting Fentanyl Supply at Its Source:

  • The U.S. military has carried out strikes on numerous narcotrafficking vessels in the Pacific and Caribbean, significantly impairing maritime trafficking routes.
  • Nationwide fentanyl seizures declined by 45% in FY2025, as disruptions upstream reduced the flow of the drug reaching U.S. borders.
  • DEA testing indicates that President Trump’s sustained pressure is forcing traffickers to dilute their products; only 29% of seized fentanyl pills now contain a potentially lethal dose, a decrease from 76% two years prior.

President Trump’s unwavering dedication to securing borders and exerting pressure on all parts of the supply chain is producing these life-saving outcomes, as America gains ground in the battle against fentanyl.
