Almost 250 years ago, amid the Revolutionary War, German military officer Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben played a pivotal role in transforming the U.S. Continental Army from a group of militias into a formidable and cohesive fighting force at Valley Forge, laying the foundation for our nation’s independence. Since then, the German-American community has significantly enriched our way of life. They have bolstered our educational institutions, bravely defended our freedoms on the battlefield, pioneered remarkable innovations, and held esteemed positions in our government. Today, we pay tribute to the legends of the past while celebrating the contemporary trailblazers whose dedication, creativity, and faith in God enhance the strength, liberty, and prosperity of our country.
For generations, the United States and Germany have maintained a robust partnership across the Atlantic. To ensure our bond remains solid, preserve our vibrant cultural heritage, and protect democratic ideals, my Administration has spearheaded efforts to encourage our European allies to significantly boost their defense spending within NATO—promoting American interests while confirming that our security partners fulfill their obligations. United, we shall continue to reinforce our enduring friendship and strive towards a new era characterized by stability, security, and enduring peace.
This German-American Day, we celebrate the determination, bravery, resilience, and notable contributions of German-Americans throughout our nation’s history. Most importantly, we commit to building a future that fortifies our shared values and upholds America as one Nation under God.
