Honoring the Legacy of Gettysburg: A 162-Year Reflection

Today, our Nation solemnly observes the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg—a pivotal event marking the bloodiest confrontation of the Civil War and a cornerstone in America’s relentless quest to uphold its Union and safeguard the treasured ideals of freedom and democracy.

By the spring of 1863, the Civil War had been raging for over two years, putting the very future of the United States on the line. Fueled by a series of recent victories, General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia initiated an ambitious invasion into the North, aiming to shift the battlefield from ravaged Virginia, defeat Union troops on their own territory, and force President Abraham Lincoln into peace negotiations.

With the destiny of the Republic hanging in the balance, Union forces stood resolute in their commitment to defend the liberties of their fellow citizens, prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. The Army of the Potomac, initially under the command of General Joseph Hooker and later General George Meade, advanced northward in pursuit of their Confederate counterparts. The fateful clash occurred near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, starting on July 1, 1863.

What began as an unforeseen skirmish rapidly escalated into a monumental struggle, with the entire war—and the fate of the Nation—at stake. As the Union’s defensive lines, famously shaped like a “fishhook,” faced assaults from Confederate forces approaching from multiple directions, men fought against men in brutal encounters at sites now etched in the annals of American history: Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, and the Peach Orchard, to name a few. The failure of Pickett’s Charge on Cemetery Ridge on July 3 marked a turning point, sealing the Confederacy’s fate and setting the tone for the subsequent years of the Civil War. The South would never recover from this defeat, ultimately leading to General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, and the dissolution of the Confederacy.

Over the course of July 1-3, 1863, an estimated 51,000 soldiers were casualties, with 7,058 lives lost—3,155 from the Union and 3,903 from the Confederacy—making Gettysburg the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil. Just months later, in November of 1863, President Lincoln would grace these solemn grounds with his iconic Gettysburg Address, immortalizing the valiant sacrifices made by promising that “we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

These words continue to resonate, inspiring citizens across our land. During one of the darkest epochs of our Nation’s history, countless brave men left their homes and families, driven by the noble ideals of duty, honor, and country. On this anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, we pay tribute to the patriots who courageously shed their blood to abolish slavery and preserve our cherished Union. Their unwavering bravery, selfless sacrifice, and steadfast commitment to our founding principles embody the enduring triumph of the American spirit.
