In the early hours of June 6, 1944, American and Allied forces embarked on a monumental undertaking, launching an assault across a 50-mile stretch of Normandy’s beaches, France. This operation, known as Operation Overlord, marked the largest amphibious invasion in history, fundamentally altering the trajectory of World War II and reshaping global history. Through extensive coordination, the Allies deployed 13,000 aircraft, 23,400 paratroopers, and a naval fleet of 5,000 ships and landing crafts, culminating in the mobilization of approximately 160,000 troops from the United States, Britain, and Canada. By the end of that fateful day, the bravery and resolve of these soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and merchant mariners had secured beachheads across all five designated landing sites: Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold, and Juno. However, this hard-won victory came at a staggering price, with over 9,000 Allied service members either killed or wounded—a sacrifice made in the name of restoring freedom to Europe.

As we commemorate the 81st anniversary of D-Day, we take a moment to honor the courageous individuals whose extraordinary valor, relentless determination, and steadfast patriotism paved the way for this landmark victory in the global struggle for freedom. This decisive triumph on the battlefields, in the seas, and above the skies of Normandy initiated a domino effect that led to the liberation of Europe, the downfall of the Nazi regime, and the preservation of democratic ideals. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the young men who answered their nations’ calls, confronting the horrors of war to vanquish tyranny. We are forever indebted to those who sacrificed their lives in this noble endeavor. It remains our solemn duty to remember their heroic tales, to honor their sacrifices, and to safeguard the freedoms for which they fought so valiantly, ensuring that such liberties remain unthreatened in the future.
