This marked the first carrier-to-carrier naval battle in military history, where opposing fleets never directly engaged but instead executed their missions from the air. After days of fierce combat, the Allied forces executed a precise strike, stopping a significant enemy advance in the Pacific Theatre and delivering a crucial blow to its naval power. This victory paved the way for the decisive triumph at Midway just a month later.
From the success of this hard-fought battle emerged a strong alliance between the United States and Australia, which continues to flourish. The current Administration is committed to strengthening this strategic partnership. Last October, a landmark agreement was reached with Australia to broaden access to rare earth and critical minerals, vital for deterring threats, facing adversaries, and ensuring economic prosperity for future generations.
