As we mark the 161st anniversary of the United States Secret Service, we pay tribute to the dedicated individuals who protect our nation’s leaders and institutions with unwavering commitment and discretion. Their professionalism, vigilance, and dedication have earned them the reputation of being “Worthy of Trust and Confidence.”
The United States Secret Service was officially established on July 5, 1865, following legislation signed by President Abraham Lincoln shortly before his assassination. Initially, the agency was charged with combating the rampant forgery of American currency, a task aimed at stabilizing the economy in the post-Civil War era, strengthening financial institutions, and ensuring the integrity of the dollar—a mission that continues today.
In response to President William McKinley’s assassination in 1901, Congress expanded the Secret Service’s role to include the protection of the President, a duty that has since grown to cover the Vice President, the First and Second Families, foreign dignitaries, and special protectees. Today, over 8,000 highly trained special agents, uniformed police officers, technical law enforcement personnel, intelligence and threat analysts, and administrative professionals work tirelessly to protect both the nation’s financial systems and the security of its highest offices, maintaining a vigilant watch over the institutions that underpin America’s stability and strength.
These dedicated individuals are prepared to act at a moment’s notice to safeguard our leaders, and we are profoundly grateful for their service and sacrifice. The men and women of the Secret Service have consistently demonstrated exceptional bravery, courage, and a steadfast commitment to their duty, risking their lives to protect others. With the rise of radical left-wing violence in recent years, their mission has become increasingly crucial.
This year holds special significance as the Secret Service plays a pivotal role in the celebrations of 250 years of American Independence. From the Great American State Fair to the Salute to America Rally on the National Mall, their efforts are crucial in ensuring the safety and success of these monumental events.
We honor the courageous members of the United States Secret Service for their unwavering dedication to freedom, peace, and the rule of law. Their heroism and sacrifices in defense of our nation and its Constitution continue to inspire generations. As long as these patriots stand guard, the flame of American freedom will remain vibrant, ensuring that our Republic grows stronger, prouder, and freer than ever before.
