Today, we celebrate the life and wisdom of Alexis de Tocqueville, a visionary observer of our young Republic’s potential and a preeminent political thinker of his time.
In May 1831, French magistrate Alexis de Tocqueville set foot in America, embarking on a nine-month journey to explore the moral underpinnings of the nation and the driving forces of the American lifestyle. Traveling from the lively streets of Boston and New York to the bayous of Louisiana and the expansive shores of Michigan and Wisconsin, Tocqueville covered thousands of miles. He meticulously documented his observations and engaged with many Americans to gain insights into the robust and successful governance system of the new nation. Although he arrived as a stranger, Tocqueville was captivated by the faith, independence, and civic spirit of the American people.
Upon his return to France, Tocqueville published Democracy in America, a profound examination of political and human nature. He wrote, “In America, I saw more than America. I sought the image of democracy itself, with its inclinations, its character, its prejudices, and its passions.” Tocqueville identified America’s strength in its churches, town halls, and city squares, but most importantly, in the hearts of hardworking, devout Americans who cherished their families, nation, and freedom.
Tocqueville’s work reminds us that freedom and democracy are unsustainable without morality and public virtue, and that extremism, bureaucracy, and disengagement lead to tyranny. Therefore, my Administration is diligently working to uphold our nation’s enduring traditions of sovereignty, freedom, and faith in God. We are fostering pride in our heritage, safeguarding religious liberty, strengthening families, and ensuring our children learn to love their country, respect the Constitution, and honor the American Flag. In this endeavor, we are guided by Tocqueville’s insight from 195 years ago: A society that desires freedom must be deserving of it.
Today, as we mark what would have been Tocqueville’s 221st birthday, his words remind us that America’s greatness lies in the lasting values of liberty, self-governance, and the integrity of its people. We renew our commitment to a future that upholds the blessings of freedom and reestablishes America as one glorious nation under God.
